Canker sores are fairly common and can be quite bothersome. It is a shallow sore that can appear on your lip, tongue or mouth tissues and have a red borderline with a yellow or white center. Unlike cold sores, canker sores cannot be transferred between people. Individuals of all ages can get canker sores, but it is more common in women, teens and young adults.
Canker sores can develop due to:
- Stress
- Having your menstrual cycle (women only)
- Hurting your mouth such as biting, or hitting it
- Food allergies
- Vitamin or mineral deficiencies
- Consuming too many acidic drinks
Although canker sores usually resolve within a few weeks on their own, there are many things that can be done to help relieve pain and help heal them. This includes the following:
- Eat soft, bland food items that are easy to chew and swallow
- Cold fluids help relieve pain
- Brush teeth carefully so that you don’t irritate the sore further
- Rinse your mouth twice daily with salt water
- Take a pain reliever
- OTC medicines may help as well. Some to try include Zilactin, Orabase, canker melts or canker covers
